Prior to the ‘Arab Uprisings’, based on a ranking of internet censorship, five of the top ten most censored countries hailed from the Arab world: Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen, Tunisia and Egypt.

Egyptian blogger, Wael Abbas blogs “Egyptian Awareness” or “Misr Digital” and in recent years broadcast a number of police brutality videos and reported the harassment of women by mobs. The police were convicted for committing acts of torture and Wael was intermittently harassed by the Egyptian government. As a victim of censorship, his blog, YouTube and Yahoo accounts were forcefully and temporarily closed. With his standing as a prominent blogger and his involvement in the Egyptian uprising, he rocketed to the public sphere and played an influential role as a social media activist. He was briefly arrested by the Egyptian army during the uprising.
